Dry Dock

Port Medway Marina have three custom built dry docks in operation, the largest of which can accommodate vessels up to 40 metres in length. A dry dock is a sealed docking facility into which a vessel can be floated, the water is then drained from the dry dock, leaving all parts of the hull of the ship accessible for construction or maintenance. We have a full team of skilled craftsman on site including mechanics, welders, carpenters, electricians and painters or you are welcome to undertake your own work (excluding welding).

The dry docks at Port Medway Marina, Rochester, Kent, England may be available for hire. For booking enquiries please call 01634 720033 or Email

Construction of dry dock

Stage 1: Dividing Vios into two halves - The first stage was to find a suitable vessel with which we would be able to separate into two, having the aft half as a live-aboard and converting the forward into a dry dock. This was found in the form of Vios, a 67 meters grain barge. After mooring her, our team of welders began construction on the frame work for the swim end, as shown in the second picture. They were then ready to begin cutting her into two.

Stage 2: Pulling the two halves of Vios apart - The timing and co-ordination of this project was important because the separation process had to occur at just the right time, when the tides were high enough to float both sections of the newly separated grain barge. Using two tugs, 'Popeye' and 'En Avante' and with the use of a tow rope, the team at Port Medway were then ready to separate the two sections.

Stage 3: Completing the liveaboard half - The Live-aboard section was then transported to a suitable area where our team of welders could complete the construction of the swim end. With this done, this half of Vios was then ready to begin her new life as a live-aboard.

Stage 4: Completing the dry dock half - Having reached this stage, the welders were then able to turn their attention to the completion of the dry dock section. Part of this involved the cutting away of parts of the vessel which were no longer needed so that the new piles could then be inserted by crane. With these we were able to build the supports onto which boats will rest.
